  I've just built emacs 18.55 from on a VMS 5.1-1 system.  When I
attempt to visit a file the minibuffer looks like this:

Find file: show default

The variable default-directory's value is "show default".

I assume this means some function has returned the value of one of
it's arguments i.e. show default.  

Did I blow it when I built emacs, or is this a bug?  Where do I look next?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
