I pulled fresh sources for gcc 1.36.91 and g++ 1.36.2 off of
trix.ai.mit.edu.  Modifying the makefile to change the installation
path, remove the "-g" options, and enable the first of the two COFF
defines, the compilation proceeded smoothly until attempting ld.o .

Four lines produce a preprocessor error:
