When Groce was researching her book on the deaf on Martha's Vineyard she asked one older person if he knew any feebleminded people who lived in the town. Given 7 or 8 names, she checked and found no evidence at all of retardation in these people. Checking further she discovered she had been given the names of all the registered democrats!
