PACS-L readers interested in expert systems for reference support might
want to check this paper for background:
     T. R. Girill, Clement H. Luk, and Sally Norton,
     "Towards Automated Consulting: Design Feedback from the
     Performance of Online Documentation,"
     American Society for Information Science
     50th Annual Meeting Proceedings,
     1987, 24:85-90 (Boston).
It gives usage information on a reference-oriented online documentation
system at a national supercomputer center, and tells why we decided
against a full-blown expert system in favor of other (but related)
strategies.  Copies are available on request.
