$D was a last-minute addition and did not make it into the documentation
until 3.1 (I think). It is quite useful -- it exapands to the part of the
address that matched the left hand of the rewrite (in most cases this means
it expands into the left hand side all over again). It is a cosmetic thing,
but it does make rules a little tidier.
