	Calls for reform resounded in Moscow's Red Square today as some
200-thousand protesters demanded the Soviet leadership open talks with
the democratic opposition. The massive anti-communist protest comes on
the eve of a crucial Communist Party plenum.

	South African police shot and wounded a black supporter of the
African National Congress near Cape Town today... just two days after
the government lifted a 30-year ban against the A-N-C. At least two
other blacks were killed in other politically-related violence.

	At least 30 (new figure) people are dead in one of the worst storms
to hit Europe in two decades. Hurricane-force winds reportedly killed 23
people in France and seven in neighbouring West Germany. Thousands of
homes remain without power.

	Sheila Copps says it isn't the job of those in the race for the
Liberal leadership to sell the Meech Lake accord. If the contenders put
their focus on the accord, she says, in the end, they will end up
without any say about its survival. She says those in the running should
put their focus on other issues affecting Canada and leave Meech Lake to

	Thunder Bay could soon join a growing list of Ontario communities
by declaring itself English-only. Thunder Bay politicians will debate
tomorrow whether to declare English their official language...as a way
to cut down on the cost of bilingualism. Niagara Falls is also
considering taking similar steps.

	Gunmen attacked an Egyptian bus carrying Israeli and other tourists
about 35-miles east of Cairo today. There are conflicting casualty
reports, but Israel's ambassador to Egypt says nine Israelis were
hospitalized.

	Legendary jazz drummer Mel Lewis is dead at the age of 60. Lewis
died in New York Friday after a long struggle with melanoma. His 40-year
career included stints with Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Kenton, and Miles
Davis.

	The Quebec Nordiques have named Robbie Ftorek (feh'-TORE'-ek) as
assistant coach replacing Guy Lapointe who was fired yesterday. Ftorek
had been coaching the Nordiques American Farm Team in Fredericton. He
was fired at the end of last season as head coach of the Los Angeles
Kings. Lapointe had been offered another job in the organization but
turned it down.
