ST. LOUIS (UPI) -- Brett Hull, the league leader with 49 goals, scored twice and had one assist Saturday night, pushing the St. Louis Blues to a 4-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings. Hull, who extended his point-scoring streak to 16 games, fueled a three-goal St. Louis barrage midway through the second period, allowing the Blues to keep pace in the Norris Division. The Blues, undefeated since the All-Star break with a 4-0-2 record, are two points behind second-place Toronto with an overall 24-21-8 mark. The defeat snapped a three-game winning streak for Detroit, the last-place team in the Norris with a 19-28-6 mark. The Blues scored three times in a span of 4:30 to take a 4-1 lead in the second period. Detroit has won just four of 31 games when trailing after the second. Dave Lowry got behind the Detroit defense and snapped a 1-1 knot at 9:02 of the second period. Lowry, who caught up with a lead pass from Rick Meagher, induced goalie Glen Hanlon to commit early and lifted a wrister over the sprawled goalie. Hull then caught the Red Wings off guard and worked a neat two-on-one with Sergio Momesso, who scored under Hanlon from the left circle at 10:25. Hull ballooned the lead to 4-1 at 13:32, whistling a hard slap shot off the blocker of Hanlon, who was pulled after the period, and into the net. It was the second goal of the game for Hull, who gave the Blues a 1-0 advantage 21 seconds into the second period. Hull took Adam Oates' centering pass from behind the net and wristed a shot past Hanlon's stick side. Hull notched his 12th multiple-goal game this season and needs only a single goal to become the second player in St. Louis history to score 50 in a season. Wayne Babych reached that milestone with 54 in 1980-81. Gerard Gallant tied the game at 1-1 for Detroit only 43 seconds after Hull opened the scoring, beating St. Louis goalie Vincent Riendeau on a breakaway. Gallant, who has a point in each of his five games after returning from an automatic suspension for striking linesman Jerry Pateman during a fracas, took a pass at center ice from Yves Racine and skated in alone. Shawn Burr cut the lead to 4-2 just 49 seconds into the third period, slapping a rebound behind Riendeau, who is undefeated in his last four starts at 3-0-1.
