	The Le Mans 24-hour race will not be held this year because
organizers failed to meet Wednesday's deadline set by auto racing
authorities. ... Racing's governing body threatened to suspend the
McLaren-Honda Formula One team if Ayrton Senna's $100,000 fine isn't
paid by Thursday night. The Brazilian driver was disqualified from the
Japanese Grand Prix last October.

	The Pittsburgh Pirates signed free-agent infielder Wally Backman to
a one-year contract. Backman batted .231 with one homer and 26 RBI last
season with Minnesota. ... The St. Louis Cardinals, who won three

by Baseball America.

	Shannon Fraley, a reserve guard for the University of Louisville,

	Robin Romeo of Van Nuys, Calif., a five-time 1989 Ladies Pro
Bowlers Tour champion, was named Woman Bowler of the Year by the Bowling
Writers Association of America. Romeo won a record $113,750 last year.

	Virgil Hill will defend his WBA light heavyweight title in
Bismarck, N.D., Feb. 25. The former Olympic silver medalist will fight
David Vedder, who won the U.S. Boxing Association light heavyweight

	San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana, who will miss Sunday's
Pro Bowl in Honolulu because of a sore elbow, may not need surgery as
feared. Doctors had been considering minor surgery on Montana's throwing
elbow, which was sore during Super Bowl week but did not prevent him
from winning an unprecedented third Super Bowl MVP. ... University of
Florida running back Emmitt Smith says he will forego his senior season
at Florida to enter the NFL draft. ... Coach Tom Landry will be inducted
into the Texas Stadium Ring of Honor.

	NHL President John Ziegler ended Pat Quinn's suspension from
coaching. the suspension stemmed from Quinn's signing with Vancouver in
1987. ... Ten nominees have been named from the Clarence Campbell
Conference for the 1989-90 NHL Man of the Year Award: Doug Wilson of
Chicago, Shawn Burr of Detroit, Mike Gartner of Minnesota, Rick Meagher
of St. Louis, Rob Ramage of Toronto, Tim Hunter of Calgary, Kevin Lowe

	Arantxa Sanchez of Spain defeated Australian Jo-Anne Faull 6-1,
6-0, to advance to the quarterfinals of the $350,000 Pan Pacific Open in
Tokyo. Larisa Savchenko of the Soviet Union fought off three match
points in a second-set tie-breaker before beating Peanut Louie Harper
4-6, 7-6 (13-11), 7-6 (7-4). Gigi Fernandez beat Japan's Maya Kidowaki
6-3, 6-3. ... The U.S. Tennis Association announced a program to
encourage minority participation in tennis.

	Lisa Martin, an Australian living in Arizona, retained her marathon
title in the Commonwealth Games in New Zealand with a personal best of 2
hours, 25 minutes, 28 seconds. ... Ingrid Kristiansen, the 1989 Boston
and New York marathon winner, is expecting her second child in July and
will not run competitively in 1990. The 34-year-old Norwegian plans to
return at either next year's marathon in Boston or London. ... Greg
Foster, a two-time hurdles champion, tested negative in two weeks of
random drug testing. The Athletic Congress's out-of-competition testing
program went into effect Oct. 2.
