Yes, your way is the simplest, and it is the way I run my system - since I boot DOS very rarely. Some people, though, have wanted a "dual boot" option that would let them boot OS/2 from HPFS and DOS from FAT - both from a single hard drive. It's not supposed to be possible to put two "primary DOS" partitions on a single disk, but it turns out that it is - as long as the first one is HPFS and the second one FAT. That's what makes this new method possible.
