I don't know the innards well enough to know if there is a real, true-life fix, but you can do what I do whenever I get this problem from GNUS (there is a similar conflict with the VM mail reader). M-x kill-buffer *Article* When you then try to fetch an article, the "*Article*" buffer will be regenerated by GNUS.
