Considering that he had the gumption to write music that got him criticized as a "modernist" by the musical establishment, he probably didn't need to get his nationalism from a teacher. It's an interesting question--maybe I can find something out. (Another composer of Armenian descent who uses folk music is Alan Hovhaness. Maybe they both got it from their parents?) Best, Peter
