I agree with Tim Buck. I prefer "gay" over "homosexual".
Consider overhearing "there's a buch of gays over there.." compared with
"there's a bunch of homos over there..". When the speaker is gay, both
expressions seem equal. However, when the speaker is not gay, it seems
derogatory.
