It is fine to appologize for "taking sides", but I think it is totally
unnecessary.   Obviously, in an OPEN discussion, the views of the writers do
not express those of the list nor of the home institution of the writer.   Free
discussion ought to be just that.   I don't know which side you were supposedly
to have taken.  I guess its even fine for someone not to like that and to
complain.   Yet, it seems to me that a public appology, while nice, is not
necessary.
