Could someone fill me in on whether or not O.S. 1.4 will use 512K of ROM? I have been a firm supporter of using 512K of ROM for O.S. 1.4 for a long time. But, from what I've heard, Commodore will still be using only 256K of ROM for O.S. 1.4. Apparently, they are Workbench completely out of ROM, and putting it entirely on disk. This will save about 100K of ROM, which they will use by expanding all the in-ROM libraries and devices. They are also expanding Intuition somewhat, by including (among other things) genlock support. Also to be put into ROM is the FastFileSystem. Actually, it is my oppinion that Commodore should find a way to expand the ROM to 768K. Commodore should put all of Workbench, all the system libraries, devices, and handlers, and all the fully-debugged ARP commands into ROM. This would make the Amiga an exceptionally easy to use computer -- just turn it on and start using it. Currently, several competitive systems have the jump on the Amiga in ease-of-use; namely, the Tandy machines and the Explorer by Headstart, which both have their entire operating systems (including MS-DOS and their graphical mouse/windowing systems) in ROM. This is the way the Amiga should be.
