While doing preliminary testing of 4.6, Marty Johnson of our staff discovered what causes the index problem, an immediate procedural solution, and has developed a code fix which we will send to NSI. The problem happens whenever you have left course reserve without clearing the screen twice, which is supposed to throw away the temporary storage block containing the CR index. The first character of the search is then taken as a command, so, for instance, if you search on "trading", it would be translated as "t=rading", but the course reserve index is still around so you get displays into that index; not what you would expect. This problem happens because there are two index flags in 4.6 instead of one and the course reserve index existance is indicated in one flag and the code is checking the other. Short term procedural solution: Always clear screen twice when leaving course reserve. Long term solution: Marty is testing the change that he made and will document it and send it to NSI. Hopefully, it will make an early NOTISes issue. I can also put the change onto BITNET if NSI has no objections (are you out there?).
