Although it is not an entirely acceptable solution, we have defined all public terminals, inside and outside the Library, this way. All documentation for accessing the system informs users that a network quit is required to leave MAGIC (our local name for NOTIS). Many other computer systems on campus allow you to 'log off', but still require the network quit before clearing the connection, so this is not something new to our system. I have received several requests to allow users to log off before breaking the connection, but this would probably require that the terminal in question not be locked into the OPAC. The LUxx transaction would then have to be keyed into the terminal to start the session, instead of presenting the user with the initial screen. This does provide a small measure of security, in that if you sign on as a patron, you are not allowed to do anything BUT LUxx. Betsy Swain, Tech 1 Michigan State University
