I have a 386 compatible machine with an ADC MD1202 external modem (1200/300 baud) connected to Com1. Here's the problem: when I call the ux1 system, or PLATO (CERL), I cannot get a connection. Instead, I get the first tone (assumedly 1200), then it steps up to the higher tone. No connect. Someone hypothesized that this was due to error correcting modems on their end, but I have no idea. I can call other numbers, such as this uxa system, BBSs, etc. Anyone have any ideas? Here are the numbers I have problems with: (UIUC dialups) PLATO (CERL): 333-2668 Mossberg/term1: 333-4000 Tanks a lot. -Mike .
