I'm sorry. I could have sworn remembering that stat() was included in the ANSI C Standard copy that I have. (Unfortunately, it isn't with me at this moment of writing.) Consequently, I had no qualms about recommending it as a reasonably portable option. Since I'm waiting for the final standard doc to be shipped, I don't really know if it is still in there.
