Real databases are massive. Consider Brokerage XYZ whose has an army of analysists working on finding the next LBO candidate. If we needed to extract from the database some information and sort it so that it could be readily browsed and furthur parsed, huge amounts of sorting and selecting is required. It therefor behooves you to use the fastest algorithms available in order to get so 'performance' out of the query lest the client get impatient. Combined with insider information it is then practicle to make hundreds of millions of dollars, all tax free (at least under present rules). You don't need lots of money, all you need is smart software and a few well placed friends.
