I received from jrg@apple.com a program called ringback, written by pst@anise.acc.com (Paul Traina). This seems to be just the thing I needed. It provides bidirectional getty service and it even allows you to call your computer with one ring to deactivate answer back so you can talk to an answer- ing machine (voice). It looks like this program was posted to alt.sources but I have it if anyone wants it. Or, you could contact the author for more information. Thanks for all your help!
