I my opinion this is one of the NIC's valuable services, especially since you do record route right (!), are on ARPA and MIL net, and are almost always up. 2) Thanks to the core gateway guys for implementing Record Route. 3) Thanks to the core for no longer forwarding 1->0 TTL packets (so traceroute works right). The nice result: vgr> ping -R sri-nic.arpa PING sri-nic.arpa (10.0.0.51): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 10.0.0.51: icmp_seq=0 time=374 ms BRL.ARPA (26.2.0.29) RESTON-DCEC-MB.DDN.MIL (10.6.0.20) NIC.DDN.MIL (10.0.0.51) NIC.DDN.MIL (26.0.0.73) ext394.brl.mil (192.5.23.253) vgr.brl.mil (192.5.23.6) sprt> traceroute sri-nic.arpa traceroute to nic.ddn.mil (10.0.0.51), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets 1 gw394 (192.5.23.1) 20 ms 0 ms 0 ms 2 ext394 (192.5.23.253) 20 ms 20 ms 20 ms 3 reston-dcec-mb.ddn.mil (26.21.0.104) 120 ms 180 ms 120 ms 4 nic.ddn.mil (26.0.0.73) 340 ms 720 ms 360 ms - Phil
