Consider the possibility that the new code you added is trashing something in the system that your interrupt server needs, and when your server runs, the system dies. Look for a blown pointer, or a buffer overrun, or the like. I just spent a week figuring out why some blitter code was causing input.device to die on my machine...predictably the input.device was having some stuff it needed ruined by a buffer overrun.
