Well, when a file is ARCed it turns it from whatever format it was in into binary format (ie. requiring all 8 bits in a byte). ftp, by default, transfers ASCII which is only 7 bit data and it will do conversions on things like 'end of line' characters etc. To stop it doing all this you need to type: ftp> binary at the ftp prompt. This allows any kind of data to get through without change.
