sounds like I needed to clarify things a bit- by printing chars I meant to
the screen- my autoVGA doesn't have a printer port.  I've since talked to
STB techie support and they've agreed to send me a card BIOS/ROM upgrade
from 2.17 to 2.20, which they believe will fix the problem.  Will tell 
y'all how it works out...
