The key number that was being flashed in the display was `98', which Eric pointed out to means that /boot was not found on /hd0a. Turns out that /boot was there but had been overwritten by a BIND server `boot' file as a result of ill conceived rcp I did back in December, just about the time this problem showed up. :-) I had looked for the meaning of the 2 digit displays in the hardware reference manuals but completely forgot about the SMM section 1 which is where the `important' values are discribed on page 67.
