|If you are logging in via xterm, there is a switch that says whether
|or not a utmp entry should be written.  wall (shutdown does a wall)
|writes to all ttys that have logged in users on it (from info in
|/etc/utmp).  Of course, if no utmp entry is written then you are
|"invisible" to programs like finger.

So using xterm -ut does accomplish what I was looking for and I have many
happy users.  Many many thanks to Faut, and I hope others find this useful
also.  Once again saved by the net!
