I have done just what you are talking about, but I have never done any
programmed data 'zipping'.  I have just used it to port applications from
the model II to a pc or at system.  Basically I used a 25pin strait thru 
cable with nul modem adapter.  Sorry I don't know the pin out, but it is
a standard nul modem box (looks like a gender changer).  Basically I use
the host mode on the model II, and then connect to the model II thru the
use of cu() program on xenix.

Oh, the other thing you may have missed is that you must use the setcom
command on the model II, before establishing the connection. Could your 
word size/stop/parity be incompatible ??
