Did you run the "fixincludes" script from the gcc distribution?  If not, the ioctl(?)
calls will not compile properly.   Also, make sure that you have installed fix-1 and
fix-2 from mit.  This is especially needed for gcc 1.36.  I used gcc 1.35 and built
R4 with no problems.... er, at least not the problems you describe.
