Here are some responses I got to my question about readline on SPARCs:

1) compile with gcc -traditional.  Well, if I try that, using gcc 1.36.93,
then I get 'unterminated character constant' in line 180 of blockframe.c.

2) make sure I had run fixincludes when installing gcc.  

It turns out that this is the case.  After running fixincludes, everything
works as expected.
