Maybe you have an older version of the manual. In my manual, this discussion is on page 2-2 (Third edition, Sept. 1988, Release 1.2). It states, earlier in the same paragraph, "the filemode is not accepted for a foreign file". The error message I get, under release 1.2.1, is: 501 Invalid file identifier; use 'name.type' I also tried it with our Spartacus TCP/IP, and it worked as expected. It might be reasonable to ask IBM to accept an optional filemode and just ignore the alpha character in it. Doug Nelson Michigan State University
