I bet they come from the same source. I also bet that they are the same the world over because of their origins. Morse code abbreviations are used worldwide because ham radio communicates worldwide. Those abbreviations look like ham abbreviations to me. I had no difficulty understanding the lines you quoted from avram's message, and I have virtually no exposure to TTY. TTY originated with news services, too, and was only taken up by the deaf when obsolete equipment became available.
