Brown-nosing almost always has a definite goal in mind, and very few people on the net are in a position to do other posters any good or harm outside of flamery or praise itself. For instance, if I post a thumbs-up for Bill Wells' work in n.n.q., how can he help me in return? -- He lives in Florida, I in Texas, and he doesn't work for the firm I work for. For that matter, even my coworkers who post aren't in a supervisory position over me, so patting them on the back wouldn't help a bit at review time. And my only outside business activity is insurance, and I doubt if someone is going to buy insurance from me just because I post an attaperson (especially if the recipient lives in another State).
