It means that you still has a number of unread articles (-:

I think that your problem is in your $HOME/.nn/init file.
You probably has a number of newsgroups that is ignored in the init file.
(! before the name of newsgroup)

The syntax for nn is:
  nn [ options ] [ -g ] [ newsgroup | +folder | file ]

If you use:
  nn [ newsgroup ], where newsgroup is all, then I think you will see all
  unread articles.
