You can get a copy of the source by waiting about 1 year. There is a PEX consortium that is funding a sample implementation. That sample implementation will be released to MIT at the end of this year, 1990. At some point after that it will become part of the X distribution. The sample implementation is not too far off schedule and will be available to X consortium members as part of alpha and beta programs this summer and next fall. Of course, if you are writing applications then you should be adapting to the PHIGS application program interface (API).
