The problem with MED (and similar programs like SoundTracker) is the interface,
or lack thereof.  Lots of pretty gadgets, but no real music notation.  And
DMCS and Sonix, for all their flaws, DO have that.  Lists of numbers may
be fine for a MIDI sequencer (which MED isn't) but it stinks for any
real composition work.
