If the trouble you had is the same as the trouble I had (that vi expected the cursor to remain at the right edge when a character was printed to the eightieth column and therefore sent a CR and an LF that you didn't need) it turned out that removing eat_newline_bug (xenl) from the terminal definition solved it.
