It seems that there are, unfortunately, a fairly large number of people on the network that can't seem to understand humor unless they are hit over the head with a 2x4. That's why the ":-)" was invented - to indicate to such people that the posting is a joke, and consequently is something they can't understand, so that they don't clutter things up with flamage about how stupid the original article was. I've been burned too by their ranting when I didn't add the requisite 2x4's to the article.
