Currently when I telnet to one of my machines, the EK characters are the
very arcane # and @ characters.

Is there a way to instruct telnetd (or whatever) to set them to be something
a little more reasonable (like ^H and ^U)?

Any help is appreciated.  I did manage to get /etc/issue to print when I
telnet to my machines.  This did NOT cause the EK problem.
