In response to your question -
Look in the file /etc/rc.local for "portmap" and "nibind" to see how the machine
starts these guys.
Then start them from the shell prompt, yourself.
% portmap
% nibind

Then use the netinfo utilities: nidump and niload to view/modify your
netinfo printing information.
