Anybody who post-processes the output of "mt status" should beware
of the 3.1C patch.  The output format is TOTALLY different, being,
dare I say it, much more VMS-ish.

It is also the case that "mt -f device status" will now give some
useful information about devices which are not tapes (e.g. it will
tell you the type of a disc).
