The R3 version of xdm created 2 processes per display for various arcane reasons. The R4 version was fixed to only use 1 process per display. The R4 version also manages the remote displays much better, detecting when they're turned off by "pinging" occasionally and doing a host of other useful tasks. Keith Packard MIT X Consorium
