The other model they had on sale was the CTR-82. I bought one (as did in instructor here in our department) and we both have been very happy with the recorder. The only drawback with it is it makes a sort of whine (on both of ours). You can't hear it much through the speakers, but it sounds really loud through the earphone. This noise is not on the tape, however, since things taped on it sound great when played on another recorder, but this whine is present even when the pause is pressed. This lone drawback is hardly noticed, and we both have been really pleased with the CTR-82 (both for SWL recording and general taping). I was in radio shack last night and saw the CTR-85 on sale. The 82 lies flat, while the 85 lies on a side (sort of) so it sticks about 5" in the air. The salesman (who may have been as ignorant as the one who gave me bad info on the 82) thought the main difference was that the 82 is stereo but the 85 is not. But this obviously doesn't matter for SWL.
