Here is a suggestion: We come up with a benchmark which exercises the language (Pascal or M2) in a way as to simulate an actual program. This program should be machine and compiler independent (meaning, no nifty optimization tricks). The program should then be run on as many different machines and different compilers as possible (with out any resident programs running, of course). The results should then be posted.
