The ._ file is otherwise known as the "binary box". It keeps track of the location of each message within the mailbox, and the status (read/unread/deleted/etc). The major flaw with it is that the disk addresses aren't in network byte order.. (soon to be fixed..) BTW, the name change from msg -> elm was at my insistence...
