This tends to happen if you have a window which is "View by [any non- icon organization]". I'm fairly sure that the Finder is querying the icon/owner database on the server whenever it encounters a file whose owner-code is not represented in the local disk's Desktop file... so that it can display the file as being a "Snork document" rather than simply a "document". The delay, and network activity seem to be greatly reduced if you display the window using an icon or small-icon view. I'm not sure why... perhaps the Finder is capable of cacheing the icons, but not the names of the owning applications. -- Dave Platt VOICE: (415) 493-8805 UUCP: ...!{ames,apple,uunet}!coherent!dplatt DOMAIN: dplatt@coherent.com INTERNET: coherent!dplatt@ames.arpa, ...@uunet.uu.net USNAIL: Coherent Thought Inc. 3350 West Bayshore #205 Palo Alto CA 94303
