If no server volume was mounted, then no arrow flashing occurred; however, starting an application with a server volume mounted, then disconnecting the Localtalk connection while the application was working resulted in the application halting until the Appletalk connection was restored. After much experimentation, I determined that the program that seemed to be causing this was GateKeeper Aid!!!! Removing this INIT and replacing it with Eradicat'em seems to have cured the problem.
