Printing two or four pages on one sheet

I am asking this for a friend. He has setup a documentin the 
format A4. (A4 its similar to US letter) Now he wishes to
print the document at a size of 50 % on a Linotronic, merging
two pages on one sheet (film) The layout program can not do
that. How must I change the generated postscript file do
merge the papers? Has someone some hints or a tool
for mainpulationg the postscript file?
