If you are using a pre-VF TeX, you should get dvips4.21 and use its afm2tfm, since that version remaps the PostScript characters to conform more closely to what LaTeX and plain TeX expect. If you are running a VF-cognizant TeX, get dvips5.01 (or later) and use that afm2tfm, since it will generate the appropriate VF files for the remapping. -tom
