Perhaps because you didn't do a "make" before you did a "make install"? BTW, is there any real need to do the install as root, other than not having to fix up xterm to be setuid root? xterm and xload. No, I don't think so, as long as you have write access to the required directories. Anyway, should I give up on running xdm out of /etc/ttys? Yes. are you going to generate an official set of fixes for those few remaining files that have hardwired dependencies on /usr/lib/X11? Not high on our list.
