This new strategy embraces exciting initiatives in tropical public health, including the development of nine new programmes in association with the Overseas Development Administration. One of these is described below, and offers challenging opportunities for high calibre scientists. PROGRAMME IN APPROPRIATE TROPICAL HEALTH TECHNOLOGY This programme concerns the further development of specific gene probes and immunological detection systems for disease agents that cause major public health problems in the developing nations. The focus of this initiative will be to adapt new DNA probes and immunoassays so that they become widely applicable to solving defined health problems overseaes. The programmes will be linked to field projects in endemic areas. The following posts are available: 1. POST-DOCTORAL MOLECULAR BIOLOGIST (Ref. MM2) The person appointed will be required to adapt gene probe technology for realistic application to diagnostic and epidemiological studies of bacterial and protozoal pathogens in developing countries. Applicants should have experience in molecular biology. There will be opportunities to travel overseas in order to apply and evaluate tests in the field. 2. RESEARCH ASSISTANT/MLSO (Ref. MM3) The person appointed will work with the molecular biologist. Minimum qualifications are HNC/BSc. Both posts are available for three years in the first instance. Appointments will be made in the range 11583-18432 (pounds sterling) (Post-doctoral molecular biologist) and 9477-14148 (Research assistant/MLSO). Applications considering of a curriculum vitae and three referees should be sent to The Personnel Officer, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Keppel Street, London WC1E 7HT quoting the appropriate reference, or telephone (44)1-636 8636 ext.201 for further particulars.
